Welcome to Term 2 in the Allen Centre Ace Programme!
I
Injury Prevention - How best to look after our heads so as to make the most of them!
In conjuction with St John the children got to:
In the Allen Centre this term we are exploring the art of 'thinking'!
We will ponder together such questions as:
Where does our brain live?
What does our brain do? Is it REALLY the boss of us?
What part of our brain does what?
Does finding out about our individual styles of learning REALLY help us at school?
How can we look after our brain so that we make sure it works at its best for us?
Scientists v's Theorists - is the hype really true?
How can we trick the brain - some very cool experiments to fool your brain into thinking quite the opposite to what you see!
Brainy bendy puzzles - how to encourage your brain to think HARD!
WALNUTS - they were everywhere! It all started when Mrs B was drying out some walnuts the kids had collected. We discovered something amazing!
- Walnuts LOOK like a brain -
- They have a right and left hemisphere.
- They are wrinkly like a brain.
- Walnuts are very GOOD for your brain!
So to kick start us into learning about our brains, we all decided an extra one would be handy to have on your table or desk. Perhaps an extra brain at home could aid you at homework or chore time? (HEE HEE).
Here are some photos of us creating our brain in a jar, or brain in a bag!
First we had a get a walnut out of it's shell in one piece!
Then it was painting time. What colour is a brain?
Brains are actually grey and white, with some black bits here and there. We decided to paint them bright pink and red. After all this extra brain creation needed to stand out!
Our brains drying....
A brain in a jar, or a brain in a bag!
Here the children are making super brains! These were made in response to thinking about how does our brain work? Each part of our brain has a special part to do.
Working out that each part of our brain has a special job to do was quite tricky. We read the book
'Your Fantastic Elastic Brain", by JoAnn Deak.
Using the following picture as a guide, we created the five key brain regions out of play dough and labelled them.
How does the brain make the body go or do??
NEURONS!
Neurons are everywhere in your brain. They are the tiny brain cells that make electrical signals to send messages to other cells in your body telling them what to do.
Neurons are what it's all about! So we .........
- Made Neurons
- Played the Connect the Neurons game to show how messages are sent to different places in our body.
Check out this amazing neutron made by Reid!

Injury Prevention - How best to look after our heads so as to make the most of them!
In conjuction with St John the children got to:
- Recognise the danger of falls and how injuries caused by falling can be avoided
- Identify potential risks at home and school
- Explore making safe decisions
- Recognise appropriate safety attire for biking and scootering
- Demonstrate the treatment of minor injuries
- Assess a patient using DRSABC an take appropriate action
- explore risks and strategies to minimise risk in contact sports
- demonstrate the appropriate treatment of soft tissue injuries
- recognise the appropriate management of fractures and head injuries
Below are some photos of these most excellent and useful sessions. A huge thanks goes to Kirsty!
